Nemours Mansion & Gardens

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Have you heard about Nemours Mansion & Gardens in Delaware. The place is set among the 300-acre country estate of the late industrialist and philanthropist Alfred I. DuPont. You have got to see this place if you are in the neighborhood or stopping through. The mansion contains 102 rooms furnished with fine examples of antique furniture, rare rugs, tapestries and outstanding works of art. The mansion and gardens are open for tours from May 1 to November 30 and as always reservations recommended. There are a variety of surfaces and levels in the gardens and grounds. The tour also involves climbing several staircases. Tours last two and a half to three hours and require a $15 per person payment as well as punctuality is a must for any appointment. There is one drawback that there is no picnic allowed on the facilities of the Nemours Mansion and Gardens. There are two elk at the top of the Vista are the work of Prosper Lecourtier, a specialist in animal figures. There are 157 jets at the center of the one acre pool. But when they are turned off as you walk your reflection can be seen in the pool. This is one to take in as you will remember your visit for years to come.

Air Tran XM A OK

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

We flew our first flight on Air Tran and was pleasantly surprised. The rate was cheap so we decided to give them a chance. It was a straight one way down to Orlando and a one stop on the return. The seats come with XM Satellite radio and there was wifi on the plane. We did not take advantage of the wifi but the XM was pretty cool as they passed out headphones to each passenger. Everyone was courteous there was a $15 per bag fee but the carry on rules were not very strict. We were provided a snack and a drink on all three flights and the planes were clean and new. The biggest problem we had seen is due to the fact they are a new carrier, they do not have choice spots in the hub. The Logan terminal is placed in one of the oldest building at the airport and is maze shaped with left and rights to get to the gate. In Orlando they are on the very end of the building so it is a long walk/tram ride to get to the front of the airport to ground transportation. We had three great flights as far as flights go and we would fly AirTran again, we paid $650 for our four round trip tickets to Orlando.

Times Square Is really awesome

Friday, March 4th, 2011

We do not have to tell you how great Times Square in New York is, it has been written, sung, and danced on paper, film and music. We do want to say that there is no more feeling of electricity then standing in Times Square among the lights, people, and hustle of the city. It is not about the stores, the tables in the square, the bleachers, the big ball the looms over the square all year, all those things are part of it though. The whole thing makes you stand back and just want to take it all in. You have seen it on TV thousands of time, but standing there you realize just how impressive standing there can be. This is truly one of the greatest places on the earth because when you are there you are in a place everyone knows. This is not a local thing Times Square is a world wide known place of destination. This is the same feeling that must be had at the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben, these places that are landmarks, known by everyone around the world. We recommend everyone at some point get to Manhattan, get to Times Square and go with the idea to do nothing. Just get there and stand amongst the hustle and bustle and soak it all in. Then go back again at night as it is two different worlds and the lights make the Square come alive. Tea512 puts Times Square as one of the top ten destinations you must see in your lifetime.

Chautauqua’s Wonder of Nature

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

We are feeling spring coming and one of our first trips to get away is to Chautauqua’s Wonder of Nature. Living in the northeast cabin fever starts to set in and you need to break off the mold and get fresh air when it becomes possible. When you visit Chautauqua’s Wonder of Nature this is a great way to get back outside and stay there. The Panama Rocks extend about half a mile over twelve acres of an erupted, Paleozoic Seashore originating over 300 million years ago. It is a ridge of Quartz Conglomerate Rock, which was carved and shaped by a Glacier, in this ancient forest. You have never seen the wonder of this awe inspiring nature an enchanting world of towering rocks. Hundreds of deep, crevice passageways cool, cavernous dens and small caves grotesque roots snake down rocks delicate ferns and mosses. There is a self-guided one mile hiking trail and Off-Trail exploring is permitted. This is a great outdoor recreation and oh so needed after a long cold winter that is fun for kids of all ages. The park has been around since 1885 and is privately owned. We bring it up because the 2011 season begins May 14 and they are open from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The cost to get in is fair priced when you balance how long you can stay. Adult $7, Children 6-12 are only $5, there are other discounts as well.

Joey Houssian in the news

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

We have been following the news about the Joey Houssian story. He is the owner of the Sled dog Company that has been all over the news. Houssian reported that did not know the scale and the manner of slaughter of 100 sled dogs. The story has become even stranger as an unidentified man who said he had killed up to 100 sled dogs filled out workers’ compensation forms as both the employee and the employer, leaving Outdoor Adventures Whistler which has the president confused. Houssian, is the 34-year-old son of Intrawest Corp. founder Joe Houssian, said he first learned the dogs had been killed on Jan. 29, when an e-mail from a member of the media was forwarded to him. The e-mail included a WorkSafeBC ruling that said the former general manager of Outdoor Adventures’ sled-dog business had admitted to shooting or stabbing at least 70 animals last April. The man in question, Robert Fawcett, has not conducted any interviews since news of the cull broke. This happened because there was a decline in tourism over after the Olympics. Houssian, who has owned Outdoor Adventures for nearly a decade, said he had no idea the dogs would be killed in such a brutal manner. He was told 50 dogs would be culled, all of them old, sick or not adoptable. The SPCA is continuing its investigation and is being assisted by the RCMP.

This place is open year round and the cost of admission is only $15 children 6-12 are $9 and under $6 is free, there is also free parking. The place has been entertaining for 40 years and puts you in the heat of the action. You can view a lot of history and the slogan at Battleship cove is “Don’t just learn about history live it.” When you are at Battleship Cove, you will experience firsthand what it was like to serve on board a Navy warship in WWII. You can sound the diving horn on Submarine Lionfish before you slip below the sea. The best part was cranking the handwheels on Big Mamie’s 40-mm guns as you knock enemy planes from the sky. The biggest treat for most in attendance was the sail through the Cold War on USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. We also learned the ship had an unmanned helicopter that hunted Soviet submarines. It was amazing to think we had predator technology back in 1960. They also have a high-speed missile corvette that the Soviets designed to fight us. It does not matter if you are a die-hard naval history buff or a casual enthusiast of military hardware, you’ll have much to discover at Battleship Cove. you can find all the fun at Battleship Cove, 5 Water Street, Fall River, MA 02721.

Breezes Resorts Jamaica Vacations

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

The cold weather on the east coast is getting us down. It started too early and has been cold since November. We are thinking about a getaway and are looking into a Jamaica all inclusive vacations as we want to keep costs down. We have never been on one of these all inclusive resort vacations but here from friends and family that it is the way to go. They have a term “super-inclusive” which means all your meals, drinks and entertainment is included. This means a variety of land and water sports, with professional instruction are included and tipping is never permitted. We need to get the whole family away as we do not have anyone who can take the kids. We feel bad they will lose some school but it is offset by the fact we can swim in the crystal blue waters of Jamaica in winter. The call the place we are looking into a tropical playground. The place is filled with quiet coves, endless beaches and shady hammocks around every corner. Sounds perfect as it is only about an hour away from the city of Montego Bay, Breezes Runaway Bay Resort & Golf Club is one of the world’s truly great escapes. We would like to try a skim across the crystal blue Caribbean on a catamaran cruise. The whole point of the vacation though is to get away from the cold and spend the day in a comfortable lounge chair while the warm, tropical sun dissolves your stress like the ice in a Piña Colada. When we started to plan there are many sites that offer Jamaica vacations but we stopped at Breezes.com because even the name sounds relaxing.

The Hermitage, a National Historic Landmark,

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

We wanted to let you know of a great stop on Route 17 in New Jersey, The Hermitage. This is a National Historic Landmark that is located on five acres of lawn shaded by centuries-old trees. The fourteen-room Gothic Revival home was built in 1847 from designs by William H. Ranlett for Elijah Rosencrantz Jr. The Hermitage is now owned by the State of New Jersey and operated by the Friends of the Hermitage, Inc. The site is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The Hermitage Museum which consist of the historic house, exhibition galleries, and gift shop is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. There are guided tours for $7.00 for adults; $5.00 for seniors; $4.00 for children if you have children six they are admitted free of charge. We found the best part to be that General Washington Is Invited to Make His Headquarters at The Hermitage in July 1778 as the Continental Army, after the important Battle of Monmouth, had marched from New Brunswick and the Great Falls of the Passaic toward the Hudson Highlands with plans to encamp for a rest at Paramus.
Washington’s secretary said after leaving the falls of the Passaic, we passed through fertile country to a place called Paramus. We stopped at a Mrs. Watkins’, whose house was marked for headquarters. But the General, receiving a note of invitation from a Mrs. Provost to make her hermitage, as it was called, the seat of his stay while at Paramus. This is just one of the nuggets in the storied history of this house.
