North Conway Outlets

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

We spent some time at the outlets in North Conway and you really do need to make a day of it. Many popular stores you would expect to find at an outlet complex. They all have great prices, as you would expect. The best thing is the Settlers’ Green Outlet Village in Conway all are in one area like an outside strip mall. The shape is more of a large circle and as you leave one store, you have plenty of directions to go which can lead to hours of walking around. There was some over lap in the over 60 stores that you can shop. There is a Russell Athletic, Nike and Reebok stores that all sell pretty much the same things. We purchased new Rebook sneakers for the whole family for $92 total. Everybody is ready for school with a style shoe they wanted. Most of the stores were running huge sales this includes major high-end stores like Coach Harry and David. Brooks Brothers, and Brookstones. The place is just fun and has a few stores for everyone as there is an Old Navy, Gap, Jockey, and Aeropostle just to name a few. We had a good time and needed more than a day if we wanted to hit all the stores next year when we return we are going to stay longer and get there earlier.

Check out the “Pearls” of Switzerland

Friday, August 27th, 2010

There are activities that are unique to Switzerland. They have a name for them as well as they are called Discover Swiss “Pearls”. When you go abroad for a vacation, you need to do something that has some kind of a wow factor involved; this makes the trip not just memorable as saying we went to Switzerland, a trip can reach that higher level when you have an activity to talk about before you say where you went. We were looking for our own pearl and we came across that visitors to the bell foundry in Berger in Bärau can now cast their own bells. That is perfect as you have something take home, then you can say we cast that bell when we were in Switzerland. Truly, this activity encompassed the Swiss experience with a lifetime memory. If you are thinking about going to Switzerland then you can find your own Pearl, many things are unique to the region. Some of our other favorites are Slaving over a hot stove with World Champion Chef, Ivo Adam, Medieval papermaking, Tales of the River Inn, and you can even explore Geneva by boat but check it out for yourself as you will see all the unique gems of visiting Switzerland.

AirTran Less Cost Less Problems

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

We flew our first flight on Air Tran and was pleasantly surprised. The rate was cheap so we decided to give them a chance. It was a straight one way down to Orlando and a one stop on the return. The seats come with XM Satellite radio and there was wifi on the plane. We did not take advantage of the wifi but the XM was pretty cool as they passed out headphones to each passenger. Everyone was courteous there was a $15 per bag fee but the carry on rules were not very strict. We were provided a snack and a drink on all three flights and the planes were clean and new. The biggest problem we had seen is due to the fact they are a new carrier, they do not have choice spots in the hub. The Logan terminal is placed in one of the oldest building at the airport and is maze shaped with left and rights to get to the gate. In Orlando they are on the very end of the building so it is a long walk/tram ride to get to the front of the airport to ground transportation. We had three great flights as far as flights go and we would fly AirTran again, we paid $650 for our four round trip tickets to Orlando.

This car drove up Mount Washington

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

We took the family truckster on the drive of its life. The transmission will never be the same. We drove up to the top of Mount Washington by car. We used our car after it was cleared to take the trip. There are plenty of rules that make a lot of cars not able to get the green light. If you have not driven up the mountain and have been to New England it will not be long before you see a car that has. They all get a special bumper sticker saying the car climbed the mountain. We went up as a family of four and it cost us $43 we are not sure about how they arrived at the cost. You will love this trip. You feel like you are driving up to the skies and a stunning vista are around every corner as you climb. They see these views change every day and no trip up the mountain is the same. This is a 6,288-foot climb to the peak. When you get to the top bring a jacket as it does not matter the temperature on the ground. At the peak there is strong winds, fog and rapidly moving clouds. This was a great time had for all except the transmission.

Authentic Swiss Hotels for Holiday

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

We were looking at going abroad next spring and are looking to stay at one of the Authentic Swiss Hotels. We want the service that is a touch more personal, and an atmosphere that is authentic. Talking with other European travelers we would want to make sure food that is well within budget but tasty. The new heard the slogan Typically Swiss and from what we have read, this is no empty promise, but rather the badge of honor for a hotel experience to be had only in Switzerland. We want to stay in place that feels old school European with some history to it as well. We want to make sure we do not wind up in a chain hotel where you lose that flavor of the local township. We are looking for something with a beautiful interior design in a breathtaking location. We were looking at the Hotel Chesa Randolina that pretty much has everything we are looking for and is a perfect match for what you would think of when you think Swiss countryside. We find that the word is that a Typically Swiss hotel encompasses all of these things so we should not have to compromise. You should plan to visit this site and explore these authentic Swiss hotels. If you are thinking about planning a Swiss vacation this is great place to start.

Walking Manhattan Food Tours

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

When you are in New York you have to check out the walking tours New York. Specifically you need to try the Walking food tours in Manhattan. They are lead by a native New Yorker and cannot feel more genuine. You will taste the best local foods and desserts from authentic restaurants and shops. When you are lead around the city by a native New Yorker you will also get the must-see neighborhood sightseeing without missing a thing. We go the city at least twice a year and this is on the to do list for the trip we are taking later this fall. The idea of having a real New York bagels and a pizza in Greenwich Village is very appealing. We have tried the local hot dog carts on the Lower East Side and would love to know what a professional guide can tell us about them. The best part of the tour sounds like the Italian cold cuts and cheese and cannoli in Little Italy as we have never been to that part of the city. They will also take you to get authentic fried pork dumplings in Chinatown. The promise along the way you will see sightseeing icons like Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side and Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in SoHo. Great idea because you eat, walk it off and eat some more, can not wait.

Storyland 2010

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

We did the annual trip to Storyland in Glen New Hampshire. There is not much to report in the way of changes except the cost increased. A day of fun is now $27 up from last years $25. They still have the deal where if you go to the park after 3pm and buy a full admission you can come back the next day free. The park is open until 6pm every night so we decided to go on a Thursday and Friday. The cost of the food is expensive and not greatest. The children are getting older and we are not sure how long this will still be a fun time. They were usually the tallest children waiting in line for rides. They do have a few rides for bigger kids but once your child is nine or ten we do not think this place will seems as much fun and more lame. There is probably a lot better use of $108 for a family of four if your kids are older. If you have toddlers, the place is great as there is plenty to do and even though it seems crowded, you never have to wait long for anything. There is live entertainment at the park and this year an unnamed girl singer was extremely impressive. These kids sing all day as they move from venue to venue-changing characters. We had a fun couple of days at the park and spent money on food, gift shop, photos, as the couple of days with hotel cost use around $400.

Motel vs. Hotel

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

When it comes to staying at hotel or a motel there is only one factor, cost. If you had the money you would always stay at a hotel. We tried to convince our self that there is no difference. We based this on when you are on vacation you are never in your room. This did not work because when you are in your room you are in a motel. The hotel has plenty of nice amenities the motel might have an ice machine and a candy machine. Hotels for the most part are kept up to date and freshly painted especially the major chains. Motels are old dingy and usually run down. The last motel we stayed at had an actual key for the room, a key you cannot get any more old school than that. We always say after we stay in a motel and deal with these things along with a creepy pool, other guests with five to eight kids. That leads to the other thing about motels the room’s walls a paper thin. When you stay a hotel you can make as much noise as you want but also not be kept up at night by the next room. Still the only reason is cost and the motels was $97 the hotel was $148, but maybe we should have stayed a day less and had a better nights sleep.

Logan Airport is Old and outdated

Friday, August 6th, 2010

General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport is a really old airport and it looks it. Opened on 1923 for the National Guard, he first commercial passenger flights was in 1927. The statistics say it is one of the 20 busiest airports in the US and the 12th busiest airport in the US based on international traffic. It handles over 26 million passengers a year and in 2005, it handled 3,902,000 international passengers. The layout is horrible, the runways stack up planes waiting to take off. The concourse is limited compared to other major airports. Transpiration to the airport is inconvenient as well as expensive. The subway and bus routes will get you to the airport but very confusing if you are out town. The terminals are not connected; the overflow parking is miles away. The overnight parking is expensive and you need to take a bus from the lot to your terminal. There are no rentals cars facilities on site as you will need ground transportation to get to your rent a car. The city is dirty and if you arrive in the winter it is cold and the snow is an exhaust colored brown. There are two other choices of airports for Boston area. TF Green in Rhode Island is about and one hour away from the south. To the north The Manchester Airport is the newest of the three in New England and the best of the three options. If you can avoid Logan Airport it will serve you best to stay away.

North Conway, New Hampshire

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

If you have never been to North Conway you might have heard about the outlets, ski town, or attractions. We have been here for a couple of days and have logged many miles up and down White Mountain Highway. The outlets are great there are over 60 stores from designer names and brands. There is fun to be had in both the summer and winter. The summer the resorts turn to mini golf, water slides and arcades. The traffic is a bother as there is only one road and everything is on it. Getting around the center of town can take some time. There are plenty of restaurants both of the local and chain variety. The prices for everything are fair. There are so many places to stay we like to stay at different one every night. The main reason we come north his Storyland and North Conway is about seven miles from Glen where Storyland is located. There is plenty more to do and see within an hour’s drive including Attitash Mountain Summer sledding, Santa Village, wildcat mountain zip racing, and Mount Cranmore. This is a great vacation spot due to the inexpensive nature and volume of different things to do. The hotels range from $99 to $160 not including a 9% tax. It will not be cheap in the end as with all vacations. Mini-golf id $25 a foursome, StoryLand is $27.00 and even Santa’s Village is $25. This is a really nice area where mountain views are to behold at every corner.

Boston Prudential Building Tour

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

There are plenty of reasons to go to the Prudential Building when you are in Boston. There might be a good reason to make it your first stop. It is situated in the middle of the city and as you walk around you can see every direction for miles. If you use the headphone walking tour it will point out all the major landmarks for you and help you plan the rest of your visit. The device they give with a walking tour is very informative and they have a kid only version as well that keeps the mood lighter. The 51stg floor of the building is a four star pricey restaurant called The Top of the Hub and the 50thd floor is the lookout observatory. You can walk around a complete circle looking out huge windows to every part of the city. You will see the back bay, financial district, Fenway Park, Theater District, South End and the North End. This is a great take for your first time in the city or even for a local. You will learn something new every time we are sure. The cost is not cheap as it is $18 for an adult 13 and over and $11 for a child. There is a lot of information to take in but it is set up for you to be able to do it all in about an hour. While you are there you will see photographers, tourists, and maybe even a couple getting engaged. It was a lot of fun and worth the money, there was no waiting and no rush, so it was a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

The Crayola FACTORY at Two Rivers Landing

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

This summer we are going to take a trip through Pennsylvania probably after the July 31st weekend. We are thinking about making a stop at the The Crayola FACTORY. The little guys are full of creativity and they say the place is where there is no limitation to creativity and imagination. You can color, draw, paint and create with the latest Crayola products. Each creative space invites you to play and explore while learning and having lots and lots of fun. See how Crayola Crayons and Markers are made. Learn about the history of the Crayola brand. Explore dozens of interactive projects and activities. This is not the real manufacturing plant, but instead a visitor center that allows the child inside each person to unleash its creative spirit. Each quarter, themes and projects change, giving visitors a variety of projects to create throughout the year. we have started to work out the trip but we think it will include two days at Hershey Park, a day at Sesame Place and a final stop at the Crayola FACTORY the tickets for the day are lass than $10. We have not booked anything yet but we are also thinking about a trip to Florida in September.

Roger Williams Park Zoo

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Roger Williams Park Zoo, is a great family stop in Rhode Island. It is one of the oldest zoos in the country opening in 1872. The buildings on the grounds are amazing as it has a beautiful Victorian architecture. There is an average of 700,000 walking through the turnstiles ever year and a membership is over 16,000 members. The mission statement of the zoo is to provide recreation, education, conservation and research. The cost compared t other attractions is low with a $12 adult cost and $6 for children. There were 37 featured animals and exhibits the day we were there and although it was a hot day we were in the zoo for over four hours. We read somewhere that the Zoo is forty acres and features over 160 different species of animals. You can always tell what a big hit was really when you ask the next day what was the best and it was the Red Panda and the Giant Anteater. If you are there and it is open make sure you check out the Marco Polo Trail a multifaceted exhibit where you follow the path of explorer Marco Polo. It is amazing to see Dromedary camels, moon bears, and the show stopper the snow leopards. You will need to bring plenty of film or extra batteries for the digital as it is a sight to behold. We though it was a really good take and clean, updated fun for the whole family.

Boston By Foot

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

There are some great summer time things to do in the late afternoon. One of these is the bostonbyfoot tour where you will walk from the golden dome of the State House to the elegant homes of Louisburg Square. Seeing the rustic and old English architecture on the Beacon Hill tour as you see where Charles Bulfinch made his mark. You also learn the story of Beacon Hill, from its rural beginnings to the vision of the Mount Vernon Proprietors to the historic collection of Federal and Greek Revival row houses. BostonbyFoot’s Beacon Hill walking tour is an introduction to early American architecture. You will also hear the stories of Boston’s prominent citizens who have called Beacon Hill their home. The best part is the tours are offered early in the evening during the week. This is a great way to a walk through the shaded streets of Beacon Hill as you can schedule it around other activities. When you are done you can enjoy dinner in one of Charles Street’s fine restaurants you have your choice of Artu, King and I, Dante and Lala Rokh. Our favorite is the Italian Steakhouse Toscano Restaurant. The tour cost $12 for an adult and $8 for a challenge.

Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

We wanted to let you know about a vacation spot in South Deerfield, Massachusetts called Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens. They opened for business in October of 2000, and claim it consists of an 18,400-square foot facility that includes a 8,000-sq. ft. glass conservatory filled with butterflies, moths and tropical vegetation. It is a great take for a family espcialy on a hot summer day when the sun is bright. The sun shines through the glass walls and heats up the conservatory to an 80-degree tropical-like environment. The kids loved the heart-shaped pond with Japanese koi graces the center of the conservatory. The place is peaceful to say the least and the sound of the waterfall is a nice change to the everyday hustle and bustle. We could easily see hundreds of butterflies fluttering freely through the air at anytime. We have never been there in the winter but have heard they keep a blazing fire is ongoing in the huge fieldstone fireplace. There are plenty of exhibits and display areas where butterfly videos are presented that show the history and evolution of butterflies. When you are at Magic Wings the workers are called Flight Attendants and they are scattered throughout the conservatory, waiting to help you identify the many different butterflies. Tickets are reasonable as adults were $12 and kids only $8.
