Every year when Oscar night roles around we say we are going to try to see the movies before the show. Another year and this lofty goal not achieved. Probably because there were better movies to see than some of these nominated. We thought this year based on the top grossing movies the hangover which received zero nominations. See the pompous liberal elite all come together and wait in hope of the golden statue. Why not let us make some predictions. We will start with performance by an actress in a leading role: Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side, Helen Mirren - the last station, Carey Mulligan - An Education, Gabourey Sidibe – Precious and Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia. We are going to go with Sandra Bullock but would not be surprised if Meryl Streep won. Next up is the performance by an actor in a leading role Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart, George Clooney - Up In The Air, Colin Firth – A Single Man, Morgan Freeman – Invictus and Jeremy Renner - The Hurt Locker. First of all we want anyone but George Clooney the most overrated actor and bachelor in the world. We are predicting that Jeff Bridges will win tonight. That only leaves the most unpredictable award of the night which is best motion picture of the year: The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up In The Air and the winner Avatar. The movie Avatar has been nominated nine times for a television awards. Enjoy the award and hopefully we will have a Woman of the Week from the red carpet. Enjoy the Show.

The tragedy that was the halftime show of the 2004 Super Bowl game is back in the news. This was a show put on by MTV productions and starred Janet Jackson and Justine Timberlake. The infamous finale of the JT song Rock Your Body came to close with Justin exposing Janet Jackson’s 40 year old breast to the world. A Philadelphia federal appeals court will re-examine the FCC fine it threw out against CBS over Janet Jackson’s what came to be known as a wardrobe malfunction. It is now in front of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia to consider whether the FCC’s $550,000 fine for CBS is permissible. The U.S. Supreme Court last year directed the lower court to consider reinstating the fine, following a ruling in another case that said the FCC could threaten fines even for fleeting profanity. The lower court threw out the fine in 2008, saying the FCC acted arbitrarily and capriciously in issuing the fine for the half-second of nudity. Six years later and CBS still have not had to pay a fine, the lawyers and the courtrooms keep spinning and there is no end in sight. The biggest crime is the fallout the NFL has produced the lamest halftime shows and each year the artists are getting older and worse. Since 2004 we have seen Paul McCartney, followed up by the Rolling Stones in 2006. We watched the Purple Rain as 2007 was Prince and 2008 brought Tom Petty and Heartbreakers out of moth balls. In 2009 Bruce Springsteen and last month we got The Who. We think that there have been six years of halftime shows that have been a complete waste of time by old time musicians who best days have long since past. This is the penalty we have endured since Janet popped out and the halftime show went into the tank. Someone needs to pay.

We thought after five episodes we would chime in on the Starz original series Spartacus original series on Starz. There is nothing new here as this show seems the take the ideas from Rome the HBO series, Gladiator the movie and the movie 300. The first thing you will notice when watch is the violence is in your face. The next thing is that when blood does spill it flows and splashes like Kool Aid all over the place. The main character is Andy Whitfield who plays Spartacus and is tough to get a read on. There is plenty of skin and sexual escapades for eye candy as well as all the violence wrapped up in each hour show. The sets are not as grandiose as the HBO series Rome although it steals a lot of the politics of class struggles. The violence is very graphic novelized like the 300, pushing the envelope as each week goes by. The real script stealing is from Gladiator and so far the plot has been a mirror of the movie with a main character from which he has been separated from wife sold into slavery and must fight for his freedom as a Gladiator. We do like it so far as it is adventurous, violent, and sexy. The dynamic between married characters Lucretia played by Lucy Lawless and Batiatus played by John Hannah has been stealing the show for us so far. We wonder if it can make it as it is only on Starz but at least we will keep watching.

This week the Billboard charts said hello to an old friend, Barry Manilow. The new release from Barry Manilow was number five, titled Manilow in Paris. The top ten broke down like this top spot number one was the sophomore effort from Lady Antebellum - Need You Now. Number two Hope For Haiti Now - Hope For Haiti, staying high on the charts at number three is the fabulous Lady Gaga – Fame. Coming at number four is the final release from Michael Jackson - This Is It. That takes us to number five Barry Manilow - The Greatest Love Songs of All Time. This release is a great way to prepare for the new Barry Manilow show at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas as it opens on March 5th. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with the Greatest Love Songs and if you are in Las Vegas check out the new show it is must see.

We wanted to catch up on one of shows Gossip Girl and recap the end of 2009. We like the show still uses Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite. The show has moved away from Gossip Girl as she no longer has the 411 on the characters dirty and juicy gossip. The show still does end with X.O.X.O Gossip Girl, but it is clear the storyline is no longer guided by the Gossip Girl. The scenes are longer away from the fast switching of the past and the Gossip Girl dropped in comments no longer drive the show or the reactions. There was even a point in the congressman scandal where Gossip Girl was named as a third reference for getting the damaging video Serena and Trip the congressman in the elevator. There also have been multiple references to TMZ. The story has fractured into three groups, the kids at NYU, the kids in the business world, the kids back at Constance. The plots jump back and forth and adding the parents in where needed. The role of the parents has taken a back seat this season. We did enjoy the last episode of the winter session where all four groups tried for a Thanksgiving holiday at the new Rufus House. This was a disaster and the turkey on the table was never even carved. We look forward to where Dan and Nate find themselves. The character of the season so far is Dan. He has had a relationship with Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg), Olivia Burke (Hilary Duff) and included a threesome with Olivia and Vanessa. College years are good for him. The other question is will Serena ever make a good choice as she has not sober or sober.

We were not sure how this one was going to although we think a Peoples Choice Award did not hurt. Fox has picked up the music-themed drama series “Glee” for a second season. The first episode of Glee was aired after the finale of Season 8 of American Idol in May of 2009. Fox left the show up on the website to view all summer. The numbers for Glee were not great and there was talk that it might not make it. Fox split the season into two half the first ended in December and the second half does not kick off until April 13, 2010. The show has made a huge splash on iTunes where songs from the show each week were highly downloaded. There have been two soundtracks released which both are in the Billboard Top 20 as of last week. So it really is no wonder the show was picked up for a second season. The question remains if the audience will grow or is it just an online audience. In other Glee news, they are having open auditions to fill three parts in Season two. Anybody can enter and win, all you have to do is send in an audition tape to the Fox website.

Well tonight kicks of season nine of American Idol and it is going to be the biggest year yet. This is not because of the talent, the format or the guests, this is due to the show might be ready to jump the shark. How do you like your subplots because there are plenty? The biggest is a season without Paula Abdul will she be missed? Will Karen Dioguardi step up to fill the void this year in just her second season? Since Simon has said next year is his last, does he play out the string on his way out? Then when we get to Hollywood week, we get our first look at Ellen Degeneres who admits she knows nothing about singing. Her talent as judge is to look at what she likes as longtime fan of the show. When you think back to the last eight seasons, we find only two winners worth any mention, first season winner Kelly Clarkson and fourth season winner Carrie Underwood. You could argue who is better as Carrie will probably be around longer but would there even be a Carrie if it were not for Kelly. If you take the top ten there have been 80 contestants and we know there is success for others like Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Kelli Pickler and Jordin Sparks but after eight season and all America has invested are we really getting our entertainment emotional investment return, and the bigger question is America ready to stop making the investment. Big Love returns for a new season on HBO so we though we would catch up with our favorite polygamist TV family. The last season ended with Ted thanking Bill for getting his daughter back safely, Bill tell him about his end around he pulled of at BYU and the church would make his problem with Ted go away. Selma gave her statement about Roman’s role in Kathy’s accident/death. Roman who was not going to home long before the murder indictment was served picks up his guitar to play, and then Joey who is full of rage suffocates Roman as he struggles to breathe. Bill returns home and asks Ben to get bread and a pitcher of water. Everyone in the backyard as he tells the family he has claimed the authority for a new church, “born of necessity.” All the present Henricksons take communion, and then Nicki returned home, she brought with her Cara Lynn. They fled the compound without anyone seeing them during the stir over Roman She turns to everyone coming clean and introduces her daughter to the family, Barb is the first followed by the rest to welcome her back. That is where we are and we are ready to go, pop the popcorn, and turn down the lights because this season is going to be hot.

Everything went on the table in the finale of the FX series Sons of Anarchy. There was some doubt after the last episode weak spots like the street fight reminiscent of the outsiders minus the rain and a police-letting gun toting biker’s walk away from attempted murder. The finale was an edge of your seat full on ride on the wild side. We watched Zobelle finally squirm, Weston and Polly Zobelle pay for the gang rape of Jenna, the weapons FBI case fall apart, Hale finally moving into lead police in the town, and the Sons were all together for a common cause. The winners were Zobelle who has saved based on the events at Jax house, Agent Stahl who covered her tracks nicely. The losers turn out to be Jenna who is on the lame for a murder of Polly in front of Agent Stahl, The Mayans for losing member and backing Zobelle, prospect for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Jax. The cliffhanger finds Jenna on the lamb with Chief Unser, Zobelle heading for Budapest without his daughter Polly, Agent Stahl avoiding blame for the Able kidnapping, Edmond Hayes murder, and the case against Jimmy O’Phelan. When the Sons returns there will be hell to pay with fire and fury as Jax hunts for his son. Jimmy O’Phelan and Cameron Hayes plan retaliation against SOA, and eventually Agent Stahl. It is another season where the FBI comes up empty. The last scene was Jax on the pier watching a boat with his son sail away as the SOA crew standby helpless.

The season seven of Curb Your Enthusiasm Finale has just aired ending the 70th show. Each season the show has been delight, it is hard to say if one season is better than another as well as one show compared to another. We enjoyed this season and the focal point was a Seinfeld Reunion, which meant we could see interaction with Jerry, Julia, Jason, and Michael. This season also included Jeff sex with Funkhouser crazy sister and Larry’s break up with cancer stricken Loretta over a car BJ. Larry tries to hook up with two-handicapped woman and an assistant with a pot belly showing bare midriff around the office. There was a pee splash that landed on a painting of Jesus, which Larry let the owner think was a sign. Larry killed a black swan at his golf club and would not confess as well as having to pretend he wears woman’s panties to help Jeff explain why there were female panties in his glove box. We watched the finale, which contained a Sienfeld reunion show of sorts, and two were laced perfectly. The theme of the season was Larry trying to get Cheryl to love him again as she did when he was EP on Seinfeld. The final scene has his plan despite all his craziness about to come to fruition, and in true LD style he cannot just keep his mouth shut, he cannot let it go and we are left to assume the reconciliation is not going to take place as no one can stand to be with LD.

We are avid watchers of the FX show Sons of Anarchy the second season has been building and getting better with each show. The last two shows have been some of the best drama television available. We are amazed at the quality of the shows from FX when you think about The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me and SOA, you have to be impressed. If you have missed the run of SOA it is a show that tries to bring you inside the life of a motorcycle club. On the surface it is guns, bikes, dirty boys, dirty girls and violence. Under the hood it is about the relationships of the members, their families, and neighbors. When we speak of neighbors it is more about the relationship between the club and the police. The club provides protection to the town they do not allow drugs, gangs, or criminals to enter the town and vigilante justice if they do. This of course makes them fans to the community, as much as the police know they are committing as much crime as they prevent. The show dynamic will draw you in as there are people you cheer for as well as bad guys to hate. Inside the club like any business organization there is infighting, power struggles; business deals pros and cons, and alliances. This show is building to a huge finale and a lot of character arcs are coming to head at once. Check out Sons of Anarchy Tuesday nights on FX.

We were excited to find that it looks like there will be a Kill Bill Three. The first two Quentin Tarantino movies Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, originally premiered in 2003 and 2004 and had a world wide gross or more than $332 million dollars. The projected release date he is shooting for is 2014. The only nugget that is out so far is “Kill Bill: Vol. 3″ will be ten years after the end of Kill Bill Vol. 2. There will be no way to use the deseasaed David Carradine the original Bill and they are being tight lipped about if they have scenes from the first two movies in the can. Setting the movies forward ten years will give Uma Thurman who plays The Bride, the main character to have had time past from her revenge mission. Kill Bill was conceived as one film, but it was released as two separate ‘volumes’ due to its running time of approximately four hours. The movie pays homage to earlier film genres, Hong Kong martial arts movies, Japanese Chanbara films, exploitation films and Italian spaghetti westerns. We have been a big fan of Quentin Tarantino and have enjoyed anything he has put his fingerprint on. We believe that if he has more stories to tell for the Bride then it is going to be as good as the first. After the Bride kills Bill with the secret Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique, she is seen driving away with her daughter. There is a trail of unhappy people behind including Vernita Green played by Vivica A. Fox. It was her four year old daughter that The Bride told that if she ever wanted revenge for killing her mother she would understand.

It turns out that No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani is the only person on the planet that has never seen Guitar Hero. The band sign a nice lucrative deal to get money form the sale of the game Band Hero. They even went as far to put on the suit and create avatars for use in the game. They only gave a couple of songs and it turns out they though that was when those avatars would be used. If you ever played Guitar Hero you know the pace dictates you play four or five songs, so if you were going to be No Doubt you are going to run out of songs. The song in the set list is the Rolling Stones Honky Tonk Women. Gwen Stefani and her legal team call this an unauthorized performance by the Gwen Stefani avatar in a male voice boasting about having sex with prostitutes. The lawsuit also claims that No Doubt objected to the “Character Manipulation Feature. Activision refused to remove and says that it’s not at fault as they have a “written agreement” with No Doubt that justifies the use of its likeness in various features in the game. Get this part No Doubt is asking for unspecified damages, as well as a preliminary injunction and a permanent injunction against distribution of the game and for Activision to recall existing copies. Come on Gwen you were on hiatus for five years and you have not put out any new music as No Doubt in a longer time. The band reformed and could not create any new music so they ran around the country playing shows for cash. Then they sell out to the latest trend master tracks to video games as a new revenue stream and they want to kill the golden goose.

The Fox show Glee is a crash between High School Musical and Juno. That is really the only way we can describe. The show has anywhere from 4-6 musical numbers, were there is spontaneous outbursts into music. Most of the time is it either rehearsal for show or an actual stage performance. The debut of the show was after the American Idol finale for season eight. The show episode two debuted this fall and has had a reorder for a full season. The show is not lighting up rating last week it did a 3.3/9 share and finished third in the 9pm timeslot, thee show has not cracked the top 25 yet this season. There are two things this show does have going for it, first it is selling a bunch of songs on iTunes every week, we are not sure if that is enough to get picked up for a second season but it cannot hurt. The other thing is the character played by Jamie Lynch as Sue Sylvester. This reminds me of the character Arie in Entourage, it is a supporting cast position but shines so bright the scenes are the most memorable. We watch the show Glee and the show has a weal plot of a pregnancy running through it, but the singing and pop music is the highlight each week. The show as the season has pressed on has added more vocals and styles by other members of the Glee club which has helped the show with choice of songs and dimension. It will be interesting to see if a show can survive on one strong character and iTunes sales to get a season two. The ratings say this should be scraped as it follows So You Thin You can Dance which is also finding rough sledding as a fall show. We wonder if when American Idol returns if following that could drive up the ratings and save the second season.
