Busted by FaceBook Updates

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

These stories are too good to pass up. If you are going to go on the lamb, you need to take that seriously. Updating your Facebook and Twitter so your friends and family nowhere you are probably not the smartest tactic. Case in point is Maxi Sopo was having so much fun on the run living in paradise of Mexico that he posted about it on Facebook. This was so all his friends could follow his adventures. The problem of course is that Federal agents, private investigators and bounty hunters are using Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Twitter, as the first place to search for someone. Since most people update their status with more than you need to know information and will let anyone, be there friend this makes hiding impossible. A federal prosecutor in Seattle tracked Sopo through his public friends list; the prosecutor found his address and had Mexican authorities arrest him. Sopo is wanted in Seattle on bank fraud charges and because of a status update, he is awaiting extradition to the U.S. The internal Justice Department document said Law enforcement agents routinely go undercover with false online profiles to communicate with suspects and gather private information. This of course was not needed in the Sopo’s case as he published his whereabouts for all to see. The only alarming thing is both Facebook and Twitter have rules against pretending you are someone you are not and there seems to be what Law enforcement is doing. There has been no official stand against this on the part of Facebook or Twitter.
