Ehrlich vs. O’Malley Round II

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

We are hearing that it is now almost certain that Former Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich is looking for a rematch against Democratic Governor Martin O’Malley. The last effort did not turn out so well and the polls are not in his favor but he appears ready for a fight. The announcement will come on March 25 which is known in the state as Maryland Day. The timing does seem right as polls show O’Malley has a 53 percent approval rating. Back in 2006 O’Malley defeated Ehrlich 52.7 percent of to Ehrlich’s 46.2 percent. This was in a mid-term election cycle that was very anti GOP as this nation wide sweep moved Republicans out of power in Congress. Four years earlier In 2002, Ehrlich became Maryland’s 60th governor when he defeated Democratic Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend 52 percent to 48 percent. He was the first Republican governor since in 1966. When historians write of our times they might look at this shift in the Ehrlich’s campaigns as a proof of a US in flux. In 2002, Ehrlich won with 879,592 votes to Townsend’s 813,422. Then in a reversal of fortune the 2006 O’Malley won with 942,279 votes as Ehrlich dropped to 825,464. The idea from the Ehrlich camp is that ride the dissatisfaction for Democrats over healthcare and all the other bad choices once they have controlled congress. The mid term elections are going to be a mandate for Republicans and Ehrlich is another example of a someone not wanting to miss the train.
