There was a report out that Meg Whitman, who is a Republican candidate for governor of California is in need of money. The Campaign has raised $3.5 million in the last quarter of 2009 and 10.2 million for the entire year. You would think that would be enough to run for a Governor even in a state as large as Cailfornia, not in 2010 where it is pay to play. If you do not know Meg Whitman is the former CEO of eBay and because she was there for the rise she amassed a considerable bank account. Whitman contributed $19 million to her own campaign in 2009. Looking at her main Republican primary competition is California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, who is reported to have raised $1.2 million during the last quarter of 2009 and heads into 2010 with $17.5 million in cash on hand. Let us preface this by saying the Poizner was a high tech entrepreneur in Silicon Valley and has also contributed $15 million to his own campaign. The political experts in the area believe it will cost somewhere about $150 million to run a statewide campaign in California. Whitman is willing to spend up to 150 million dollars of her own if she needs to. The winner will likely face Jerry Brown, the current California Attorney General, former Governor of California, and former Presidential candidate. This is another election to watch in 2010 and the first Republican debate takes place on March 15th and the primary is on June 8th.
