Bloomberg vs. Thompson Round 1

We have no dog in the race for Mayor of New York. We hardly every post about local politics but this race is interesting. On one side you have Billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg and on the other his Democratic challenger City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. They meet for their first debate, we always love a good debate, and this one did not disappoint. We reported back when Mayor Bloomberg was giving away favors to the city council to let him run for a third term. New York has never had a three term Mayor; Bloomberg was the first to make this a reality something even Rudi Giuliani could not make happen. The candidates debated for an hour over issues like education, housing, and development. The two best lines of the night were City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. saying, “The people of New York City aren’t for sale.” Bloomberg the richest person in the city, has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to organizations that later back his policies. The mayor has spent $64.8 million on his bid for a third term, while Thompson, who raises money, has spent about one-sixteenth of that. Bloomberg is no longer a member of any party but is running on the Republican and Independent platform. Bloomberg nailed his opponent for everything that wrong about the city’s notoriously disastrous school system under Thompson as president of the Board of Education. Thompson fired back there was some accomplishments to which Bloomberg said it was not enough and “You don’t get a medal for rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.” This looks like it going to be a more spirited campaign then the last and that is good for the city. Bloomberg was leading the last poll we saw in late September 52-36.
