Lobbyists visit the Whitehouse

We finally have the list of people allowed to bend the Presidents ear in the White House. These are the people that received invitations from the President. There are celebrities, political and business leaders as well as high profile donors. The pressure on the White House to release a list of people who have visited since President Barack Obama had taken office in January. The partial list comes with a promise to start disclosing comprehensive visitor lists in coming months. This will be making good on the promise to be most transparent administration in history. This is two sided as it also shows that despite another campaign pledge to reduce special-interest influence on policymaking, lobbyists are getting face time. The celebrities included Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney Denzel Washington. From the Business world Microsoft co-founder Bill Gate and current CEO Steve Ballmer. The person who should get his own key is Labor leader Andrew Stern who has visited 22 times in less than 10 months. The lobbyists are making their presence felt and probably the reason the list was delayed so long. The list includes Ed Yingling, American Bankers Association and a registered lobbyist. These people all made multiple visits and meet with various members of the staff a well as the President these include Camden Fine, chief executive of the Independent Community Bankers of America and a Washington lobbyist, Steve Elmendorf, a Democratic strategist, lobbyist and Lobbyists and Democratic fundraisers Anthony and Heather Podesta. We find it refreshing that the list was released but we feel that the next step to being transparent is to documents the minutes of the visit and the intentions of the guests.

Congress did not get the Hope and Change message

The domino effect is about to start in Washington as the senate cleared the stopgap spending measure to avoid shutting down most federal agencies at midnight over the weekend. The measure on President Barack Obama’s desk gives Congress until December 18 to finish seven incomplete spending measures that were supposed to be wrapped up by September 30. The Senate voted 72-28 vote after a 247-178 House vote earlier in the day. It is amazing that they can agree on not doing their job or putting it off for six more weeks. The anti-shutdown measure was attached to a $32.2 billion spending bill for the Interior Department and environmental programs, one designed to send billion of dollars for clean and safe drinking water projects. While every company, campus, school system, are cutting back and reducing spending, it is nice to know the Interior and the EPA and some smaller agencies received increases of $4.7 billion over 2009 levels, an increase of 17 percent. This makes perfect sense as these increases are simply unaffordable, unsustainable, based on government’s dismal deficit picture. The reason they said was former President George W. Bush had squeezed interior and environmental accounts. This large measure contains 542 earmarks totaling $341 million in the bill. Besides the clean water projects, there’s money for land acquisition for parks and wildlife refuges, visitor centers at national parks, and repair of landmarks. John McCain said it best “Seventeen percent of the people in my state are without a job, and we’re going to spend $150,000 to renovate an opera house in Connecticut?

Government money is not free

We cannot stand when some one say that it is just government money. The problem with that statement is the government has no way to earn money except through taxes which means it is our money. Therefore, when you hear that American taxpayers will be paying over 30k for each vehicle sold. When you do the math, it cost $24,000 per vehicle that was sold under the government’s “Cash for Clunkers” auto program. A study reported that of the 690,000 vehicles sold under the program only around 125,000 of the sales could be credited directly to the Cash-for-Clunkers program. The balance would have happened with out the program. The report average cost for a vehicle was only $26,915.Remember the government money set aside for this program was three billion dollars. We just want to make the point again that money is coming out of your taxes so it is your money. We understand the taxes have not gone up since President Obama has taken office but he has tripled the deficit and has admitted to cost over runs in Social Security and Medicare so the higher taxes hammer will fall it is only a question of when.

Stimulus Jobs a Big Fat Lie

This is not rocket science, as everyone that can see with two eyes knows the stimulus is not creating new jobs. If it were, unemployment would not still be climbing. We find out now the President Barack Hussein Obama economic recovery plan has overstated jobs created by thousands. The $787 billion stimulus program claimed more than 30,000 positions paid for with recovery money right out of the gate. This figure was overstated by as many as 5,000 jobs. The funny math the White House used was found to count more than ten times the actual number of jobs. They also credited the stimulus program with jobs they were counting anywhere from two to four times. The FCC reported stimulus money created 4,231 jobs; the real numbers was around a 1,000. A Georgia community college reported creating 280 jobs with recovery money, but none was created from stimulus spending. Our favorite was the Florida childcare center that claimed the stimulus money saved 129 jobs but really used the money on raises for existing employees. This is fine but even at 30,000 it is very different from the 3.5 million jobs it was supposed to create and save by the end of next year. Just wait until Friday when the larger report comes out that includes the jobs repairing public housing, building schools, repaving highways, and keeping teachers on local payrolls. We wonder what kind of funny math and inflated numbers we will get with those. The proof is they know the report is bogus but recovery.org Web site is still citing 30,383 as the actual number of jobs linked so far to stimulus spending. These numbers are funny anyway there was $28.3 million contract for creation of a call center that reported creating 4,231 jobs, but 3,000 of those workers were paid for five weeks or less. The lame stream media does not want to try shining a bad light on this administration. This is going to turn into a problem if it is found they are inflating numbers then it does need to be addressed.

President Obama donation a gift that keeps on getting

President Barack Obama has been having an early holiday. Those who say it better to give then receive would find that the President thinks that after he receives from you, he will give you something. He has rewarded the top Democratic donors with all sorts of goodies from holiday visits to the White House to policy briefings. He really is changing the way things are done in Washington. We understand this has been happing for ears with all presidents but they did not promise to change Washington like the current Commander and Chief. St Patrick’s Day only 56 days after he was sworn in when he made the change Washington pledge, he invited 39 Democratic donors and fundraisers to a White House reception. Top donors are also kept in the know as President Obama deputy chief of staff Jim Messina went to Los Angeles and San Francisco to brief top donors on the administration’s national health care overhaul. This also includes President Obama round of golf with fundraiser Robert Wolf while on his family’s August vacation at Martha’s Vineyard. Wolf is the CEO the UBS Group for the Americas. We already posted about the nomination fundraiser Alan Solomont as ambassador to Spain as well as many other appointments at the time. President Barack Obama has put tough ethics rules in place and that every name of every person that comes to the White House will be released. We have looked for the names but it is probably in the same draw as his birth certificate.

Democrat’s infighting continues over Healthcare

It is amazing with the majority the Democrats have they cannot even come to an agreement themselves. They have carte blanche to pass anything but are stuck because they understand the yare not changing healthcare in the US, they are only changing healthcare insurance. The strategy to push a health care overhaul through the Senate and wind up with a bill on President Barack Obama desk by year-end is still eluding them. Majority Leader Harry Reid Democratic bill includes the option of a government insurance plan, which caused the moderates in his own party to oppose. They also know that every Democrat is needed to break the filibusters Republicans are vowing to mount. Yesterday we heard a quote from Democrat Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, “We are a long way from reaching conclusion.” The House is even worse as for two weeks Speaker Nancy Pelosi efforts to draft a consensus health care bill for a vote have been stalled because of disagreements among Democrats. They are struggling with how to set fees for doctors, hospitals and other health care providers participating in the public insurance plan. The other internal disagreements are relating to abortion services and health care for immigrants. Because of these issues even Pelosi admits she does not have 218 votes needed. Check your calendar there are only nine weeks left of 2009. There is so much going here behind the scenes that will affect so much, including cutting Medicare, raising taxes and increase health insurance premiums. The rubber will meet the road soon as Majority Leader Harry Reid Democratic bill is close to the Senate floor, then the question becomes where are Senators Nelson of Nebraska, Landrieu of Louisiana, Bayh of Indiana, Lincoln of Arkansas, and Snow from Maine going to vote.

President Bush back in the saddle

Nine months removed from the White House a relaxed and charged President George W. Bush made his debut Monday stepped back into the light. There was a crowd close to 15,000 people who listened to the former president reminisce about his White House days. President Bush spoke for 28 minutes onstage. He received a standing ovation from the friendly hometown crowd. The crowd at the “GET MOTIVATED!” seminar and this well-publicized event appears to mark the beginning of a higher profile for Bush. This follows up last weeks three speeches in Canada, and he has joined the Washington Speakers Bureau. Next up is another motivational speech next month in San Antonio. He is working on his book due to be released next year, as well as planning his new presidential library and policy institute at Southern Methodist University. There were many others there including Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani, and Terry Bradshaw. We have no official word on what the President was paid but it has been floated his fee was $100,000. There is one thing to note, Obamanaics there was no teleprompter in sight and his comments were genuine and true. Many of those who know him or have been with him for years said he seemed more comfortable speaking now than he did as president.

President Obama audacity of a campaign promise

President Barack Obama made campaign promise and scolded the republican administration for being in Iraq the wrong war and when he was president he would concentrate on Afghanistan calling it a war of necessity. Today we watched as he mourned 14 Americans killed Monday in helicopter crashes in Afghanistan. He had the audacity to tell a military audience that he will not be hurried to change U.S. strategy in the war. Was this the audacity of hope? We have been waiting on a decision on whether to commit large numbers of additional troops to the war next year. General Stanley McChrystal the top military commander in Afghanistan favors an increase of roughly 40,000, which would allow the U.S. military to expand. We have never heard a general request less troops so we understand the number might be high. The bottom line is he has wavered on this decision for 10 months and he claimed this was the fight to be in. There is something unofficially called the Biden plan that has US troops changing the tactic to a hunt and kill method of fighting as opposed to winning the hearts and minds. He has been called out by former Vice President Dick Cheney said Obama should stop dithering while America’s armed forces are in danger. Let us be clear on these 14 servicemen that gave their lives for our freedom. In the first crash, a helicopter went down in the west of the country after leaving the scene of a fire fight with insurgents, killing 10 Americans – seven troops and three U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents. In a separate incident in the south, two other U.S. choppers collided while in flight, killing four American troops. These are not troops sitting with targets on their back but we have stretched these troops to thin with countless deployments and no clear plan.

Hail Mary Play from Dodd

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd who is having a really bad term decided he would pick on the biggest bully in the country, credit card banks. He filed legislation that would stop credit card holders in their tracks. The measure called for an immediate interest rate freeze on existing balances for the estimated 700 million credit cards in circulation. This has no shot of passing but it will sure sound good during the upcoming campaign. Can you hear him now “Chris Dodd is the only one with guts to stand up to the banks on capital hill; Chris Dodd is fighting for you, the little guy.” The truth is this legislation will never go anywhere in the Senate. The banks which had an immediate comment claim that capping interest rates would cut their profits and force them to lend less money, which would reduce spending and worsen the economy. It seems odd that a person so connected to big banks after he was tied to a sweetheart loan scandal. The Senate Ethics Committee cleared him of violation. There already was credit card reform as part of the banking crisis and tarp that puts new rules for credit card lenders into effect in February. The law limits when and how banks can hike rates, but it does not set a cap on the amount of interest that can be charged. The most recent poll we had seen in his home state shown that 47 percent of respondents view Dodd unfavorably or very unfavorably. The unfavorable number is even higher among unaffiliated voters a whopping you lose 53%.
