Another Democrat in the tank

As the saying goes desperate times call for desperate measures that is where Democratic Senator Christopher Dodd finds himself. A recent poll showed Dodd running nine points behind former GOP congressman Rob Simmons. Clearly the toughest re-election fight in 30 years. He makes the claim that he denies special interest and lobbyists. He amy be denying their thought but not their cash, he is still cashing lobbyist campaign checks and rubbing shoulders with them at fundraisers and party gatherings. The theme of the campaign has been lobbyists can’t get meetings with Dodd, he won’t return their phone calls, and will not even give them the time of day. The most vulnerable Senate Democrat in 2010, has driven home his message in fundraising pitches and campaign videos. We find out this does not mean he is not raking in tens of thousands of dollars in lobbyist campaign contributions this year. He has stopped letting lobbyists host fundraising events. It means he will not be kept from schmoozing with lobbyists at places like Martha’s Vineyard, a favorite summer getaway spot for the rich and famous off the Massachusetts coast. This where he attended the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee weekend retreat where close to thirty senators joined major party donors, including lobbyists. Since he is on the front lines of healthcare in Senator Ted Kennedy absence this has been a cash cow. The contributions have been reported from The Glover Park Group, Richard Tarplin, Christopher R. O’Neill, the Podesta Group, and Heather Podesta + Partners, Dodd has collected $436,062 from lobbyists since 2005, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Dodd has been criticized for collecting Wall Street contributions while chairing the Senate banking panel. He’s also come under fire for his role in writing a bill that protected bonuses for executives at bailed-out insurer AIG, and for allegations he got favorable treatment on two mortgages with Countrywide. This guys has to go and do not let the door hit you on the way out.

President Obama raises $3M for DNC

President Barack Obama made two fundraising stops to aid the Democratic National Committee, over 100 people paid $15,200 each to dine and see the president at the home of fundraiser Penny Pritzker in his hometown of Chicago. Penny Sue Pritzker is an American business executive, and a member of the Pritzker family of Chicago, one of America’s wealthiest business families. She is the founder and current Chair of Classic Residence by Hyatt, a chain of luxury senior living communities spread throughout the United States, and the national finance chair of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. The have had to rough it as of late in the Forbes 400 list of “America’s wealthiest” showed her as the 135th richest person in the U.S. she has an estimated net worth of $2.8 billion. Then a slight drop in 2008 as Penny Sue Pritzker was tied for 227th with $2.0 billions. Last year the horro to find she had dropped to 647, with an unbearable paltry net worth of only $1.1 billions. After that dinner President Obama headed off to a larger group with smaller pockets. They were willing to pay $250 to $2,500 each to attend an event at a downtown hotel. Democratic officials said they expected the two events to yield as much as $3 million.

President Obama news conference crasher

Our favorite part of last night lovefest over healthcare where there was only two tough questions asked and neither answered was question nine. President Obama reads from the list of reporters from the press core to interact with the leader of the free world. When he let a couple newspaper folks ask a question the first was Steve Koff of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, this of course was so President Obama could speak about his trip to Cleveland the next day to emphasize healthcare work being done at Mayo clinic and the Cleveland need for reform. The problem was Steve Thomma of McClatchy jumped up and asked a question. The feed put up Steve Koff name and President Obama answered his question it was not until he tried to move on to Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun Times that it was pointed out the Koff never asked a question. Steve Thomma question was not about Cleveland but asked if the Healthcare plan would be the same for the public that the President would have?

Polyphonic changing music business

There is going to be a new talent finder on the music landscape. The company called Polyphonic will invest in new and rising artists who are not signed to record deals and then help them create their own direct links to audiences over the Internet. The idea is from Brian Message, manager of the alternative band Radiohead. The rise of the Internet as a means of promoting and distributing music is moving at light speed. Physical album sales fell 20 percent, while sales of individual digital tracks rose 27 percent, to 1.07 billion. Well established Bands see that they can direct distribute their music and have dropped the need for a major label keeping a larger share of their revenue. Polyphonic, will treat each band that receive investments from the firm will operate like start-up companies, recording their own music and choosing outside contractors to handle their publicity, merchandise and touring. This is a 360 operation but giving the bad a stake in the compensation. The artist will share in all the profits from their music and touring. They will maintain ownership of their own copyrights and master recordings. The niche is a band dropped from a label because of sales under 150,000 these artists can still make music and tour in multiple cities, and still have a profitable band.

President Obama lack of Reality Check

After watching President Barack Obama gave his fifth press conference in six months. This was the fourth on in prime time. That compared to President Bush who did four in eight years. The President moved into the East Room of the White House and was met by a press core with no bite. He spoke on his agenda for healthcare for nine minutes and then was asked questions for the next 46 minutes. The softballs were pitched in if the question had any fight; the president just took the question where he wanted. President did not take any questions from Fox, CNN or MSNBC. Our favorite quote of the night was when President Obama looked into the camera and said “My Plan is the Best One.” We have no heard anything has not been saying the last ten days, two thirds is deficit neutral and the other third supplemented with tax dollars from the rich. He did come a new a figure saying the inherited a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit even though it was last reported by President Bush budget office it was around $455 billion. We also know that when this number is updated for August release it is going to be 1.8 trillion.

AT&T e-Book Reader Announced

When ever something is hot there will be a copy cat. The first in this case was the highly successful Amazon.com Kindle e-book reader. Once an idea takes hold a new platform comes along either trying to advance or add bells and whistles. Enter AT&T which is planning to support an electronic book reading device. The device will be created by Plastic Logic Ltd. which has a deal in place with Barnes & Noble that they will supply digital versions of books for its device. The Kindle uses Amazon’s e-book store and a wireless connection provided by Sprint Nextel Corp. Since AT&T is the number one carrier in the US and they already hold an exclusive contract with Apple for the iPhone the alignment seems right. The improvement is the screen will be close to 8.5 by 11 inches, and display business documents in nearly full size. There are two newspapers already on board the USA Today and the Detroit Free Press. The AT&T network is compatible with overseas carriers, which means that the Plastic Logic reader could work internationally, unlike the Kindle. AT&T is eager to see more non-phone devices use its network, and has set up an Emerging Devices division to attract manufacturers. The only truth is Amazon has led the way here and it will be interesting to see where everyone stands when the dust settles. Verizon insiders say the have been approached to market five different e-book readers on their network as well. The device is not set to ship until early next year. The hope was to have ready for the holiday season but it look more like spring of 2010.

President Obama does not get his way

We heard President Barack Obama for over a week of tirelessly pressuring Congress to move his top domestic priority, demanding there is a vote in the House and Senate by August. This is the way this President Obama administration have demonstrated force on every issue; they jam things down our throat claiming it needs to get it done, even if the plan is fiscally stupid. Congress is obviously tired of getting pushed around at lightening speed especially the senate. The best hope for this summer is action by the full House by the end of the month and some sort of agreement on a bipartisan plan in the Senate before congress August vacation. The big news is the president cannot get Democrats in both chambers on board to his timetable. They are having reservations about moving such complex and costly legislation too quickly. President Obama has scheduled a prime-time news conference today, expected to focus on health care. South Carolina Republican, Sen. Jim DeMint, on NBC Today show, said it best when he said someone must put the brakes on Obama, and accused the president of engaging in “a spending spree.” Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is on record vowing weeks ago that the House would vote by the end of July on legislation. The polls are starting to show a dip for the President. We have also seen that approval for the president’s plan has now slipped below 50% and a sign that might be making congress a little weary of rushing into a higher deficit in these times.

President Obama halts uranium mining

President Barack Obama will send his choice for Interior Secretary Ken Salazar out on Monday to give the company line. Salazar will announce Monday that his department is temporarily barring the filing of new uranium mining claims on about one million acres near the Grand Canyon. The land is being “segregated” for two years so that the department can study whether it should be permanently withdrawn from mining activity. This has been years in the works as Conservationists contend mining leaves the Grand Canyon vulnerable to environmental damage. There are as many as 10,000 existing mining claims on lands near the Grand Canyon. There are 1,100 uranium mining claims are within five miles of the Grand Canyon National Park. This protection by Salazar will not stop uranium mining claims already filed near the Grand Canyon. They contention is this threatens the hydrological and the natural resources of that park. The real reason for the ban is the most prominent use of uranium from mining is as fuel for nuclear power plants. This does needs to happen as on June 25, 2008 the House Natural Resources Committee voted overwhelmingly to enact emergency protections from uranium mining for 1,000,000 acres of public lands around Grand Canyon National Park. It is amazing we can use every power sources imaginable but nuclear power is no longer an option.

President Obama Hides Budget Update

President Barack Obama is coming clean about the huge gap between the first predictions about the budget and the real world we live in. The annual midsummer budget update will show higher deficits and unemployment and slower growth than projected in February and then updated in May. The release of the update that traditionally happens in the middle of July has been put off until the middle of next month. Nobody wants bad news and then to admit your wrong is too much for this President to swallow. He also might want to wait until after Congress leaves town August 7 summer recess. Let us not forget those budget predictions unemployment would peak at 8 percent. The forecast called for a 3.2 percent growth next year, then four percent or higher growth from 2011 to 2013. When they come clean, the downward revision in growth and revenue projections will mean that budget deficits would be far higher. The nation’s debt (which we report everyday) is the total of accumulated annual budget deficits that now is 11,600,488,226,683.25. The budget looks at the deficit as a one-year number. This number is the total previous indebtedness that is still outstanding.
