FaceBook losing Seniors

New today says the people over 55 sign up for FaceBook then use it less and less. It was not long ago when FaceBook, touted their triple digit growth with the over 55 demo early in 2009. If you recall between November 2008 and February 2009, the fastest growing segments on the social network was over 55, up 175.3% for females and 137.8% for males. Turns out spring has not been kind to FaceBook from the older set as there were actually 650,000 less users the only age demographic with a decrease in users. This is what happens through a media machine and Twitter and MySpace will see these same trends. When you put on your television everyone is talking about FaceBook, Twitter and MySpace you want to see what all the fuss about. That being said these social media programs are not for everyone. There are pros and cons to stay connected and to walk away. The appeal to find old friends on FaceBook is strong but once you have searched them out, updated each other on the last number of years, that is all there is. The same thing is happening at Twitter where people join because they hear it every where and then after a month or so they leave. Part of this with older people could be lack of training these sites provide and the answer might be YouTube style videos showing the power of what can be done. Let not worry about FaceBook as even with a drop from the older set they still say a 4% overall growth during the same period.
