Yahoo pulls plug on GeoCities

Yahoo to shut down GeoCities, the Web site publishing and hosting service it bought in 1999 for $3 billion in stock. The service will be shut down later this year. GeoCities accounts will be given the option to sign up for Yahoo’s Web hosting service for $5.98 a month. GeoCities is gone the way of failed experiment at Yahoo like, Briefcase, Farechase, My Web, RSS ads, Yahoo Pets, Yahoo Live, Kickstart and Yahoo For Teachers have or will be eliminated. This comes with a lay off nearly 700 workers which is the third round of job cuts during the past 14 months. Geocities was setup for users to make free website with unpaid ads running from Yahoo on every page. These sites were set up using tools they provided to make an easy to create a website in a few easy steps for free. The idea these site will move to pay service is probably not going to happen. This is more of a way to clear space from the servers and remove free services squeezing ad revenue.

FaceBook Friday TOS Results

FaceBook invited the 200 million people who regularly use the site to vote on its governing documents. We do not know how much effect this vote it is going to have. FaceBook launched the vote after the change about who is in control over users’ personal information. FaceBook members had until Thursday afternoon to choose either the current terms of use, or a revised set of documents that reflect input from users over the past 30 days. FaceBook said the vote would be binding only if 30 percent of the site’s active users voted, which means 60 million people. There have only been 640,000 people that have cast ballots by Thursday afternoon. Friday FaceBook will announce the results and reveal what is the next step in the process. This was set up to fail as they knew there were only 60 million US members and that is where the outrage over the TOS was coming from.

Two profiles for social media?

We were talking in the office and it seems a choice needs to be made when using social media outlets. Are you going to be business professional or a plain common user? Can you be both with the same profile? Should you have a work professional profile in addition to a common user profile? There have been many stories where people have posted things to FaceBook or Twitter for their friends to see, and then realized all of their business friends and followers see it as well. We have this situation with a FaceBook account; the people there are all friends and family. The stuff we post on this blog is not of interest to 95% of them. The last thing you want is a political debate at every family function about something the blog said a couple of months ago. This works well for FaceBook, where our identity is personal, the struggle is on Twitter. We follow celebrities on Twitter and a reply to any of them is like shooting it out of cannon to all the tea512 readers. Do they really need to know how much we love Taylor Swift, or the impulsive need to get a reply from either Fred Durst or Trent Reznor? These things then become facts on the Twitter feed. When Ice T started his record label, he named his Twitter account after the record label name. Then he did a shout out to everyone he knew tweeting more then just about the label. This is new uncharted area for most and questions the need for a divide, or does there?

That is why we have a Tivo

News is out that TiVo, which allows viewers to digitally record programs and fast-forward through ads, is trying to sell ad spaces on its screens. The new ads are called interactive, as they will ask the viewer to do something, things like, enter in a new channel number, or press a button on the remote. December, TiVo began offering ads that appear as a small piece of text when viewers pause a show. Advertisers can choose the specific show or genre they want their pause ad to appear. Cable and satellite companies are also working on interactive ads. The whole reason to get a DVR is for two reasons the first is to record shows so you do not miss them. The second is to cut the commercials out of them so when you watch three hour long shows you can watch them in two and half. This is proof we are never going to get away from advertisers trying to jam products down our throats. The problem here is TiVo is making it happen one of the best selling points of the product is now being cut out by their own greed for more revenue. There is pressure from advertisers that know Tivo, DVR users are zipping by commercials, and millions of dollars are being wasted. We wish it had not come to this, as it always seems a good thing can never last in the purist form.

MySpace Founder shown the door

Chris DeWolfe, a founder and the chief executive of MySpace, the social is leaving the company in a management shake-up. Can there be anything worse then thrown out of your own company? The writing was on the wall with the appointment earlier this month of Jon Miller, the former AOL CEO as the chief digital officer of the News Corporation. DeWolfe’s exit was totally involuntary, there is in talks for a continued role at the company and he will remain on the board of MySpace China. The News Corporation bought MySpace in 2005 for $580 million. The loss of market share and the head to head competition with FaceBook was what did DeWolfe in. While Facebook has positioned itself to be the Internet’s Mecca of friendships and relationships, MySpace has been reduced to a media and entertainment destination. The traffic trends tell the whole story as MySpace drew about 54 million unique visitors in February, down from about 56 million in the same month last year. Facebook drew more than 65 million, up from 20 million in the same month last year.

Second Life opens a Red Light District

People who want to use Second life, the virtual world for such things as taking classes, prototyping buildings or designing virtual goods can now do without adult content. There has been a long-standing problem that there is too much sex in the Second Life. The response from Second Life is to move all adult-oriented content to a new, X-rated “continent” as a virtual red light district. Linden Lab creators of Second Life claims the changes will begin to take effect in June. Second Life users, will be able to block adult content in their searches or on the flip side let people specifically search for adult-only items, excluding everything else. This is a new take on give the people what they want. Linden is implementing a three-tiered rating system for the site – PG, Mature and Adult. Users will automatically be given access to PG and mature content on sign u pas you must be 18 to join. The user must prove they are at least 18 before they can access adult, X-rated content. Linden Labs Second Life has been around since 2003 and has seen spikes in growth, from users, corporate, and education communities but has never blown up like MySpace, FaceBook or Twitter.

President Obama puts CIA in tight spot

President Barack Obama speaking at the CIA  Virginia headquarters tried to defend his choice to release top-secret memos, that detailed the CIA’s use of simulated drowning while interrogating terror suspects. The Justice Department published previously classified memos that described the President Bush administration CIA interrogation techniques. There has been a denouncing of this action by four former CIA directors and several senior agency officials, opposed the release of the memos. The President said he would not to seek prosecution of Bush administration lawyers, CIA agents, or interrogators who took part in approving or carrying out the harsh interrogation tactics. There is another shoe to drop as the Senate Intelligence Committee is completing an investigation of the CIA’s detention and interrogation program. These decisions by President Obama might hand tie any future action from that committee. You have to believe the agents that meet with the President for this Q&A are left feeling that he does not have there best interest at heart. When you release secret CIA documents for whatever reason, you are making their missions and actions more difficult moving forward. The relationships they make are based on trust and once it is known that your anonymity could be in jeopardy, it makes it harder for anyone to want to help you.
