Facebook sells you down the river

This must be the week to pick on Facebook. There is a rumor that they are about to cash in on their huge database of members. Facebook is about to farm out the personal information it has on their 150 million members creating one of the biggest market research databases on the Internet. The plan is for multinational companies to target the Facebook members in order to research the appeal of new products. They will allow these companies to question selected members based on details like single, married and gay or straight. This is the benefit of the new Facebook instant polling tool. The instant response application from Facebook would be a major upgrade to lengthy process of focus groups most major companies use around the globe today. This has already been sold to CareerBuilder and AT&T is using as a trial. This should go live this spring, as you will see an influx of questions about your habits. This will be different then the Beacon project launched in December 07, where you could see what other users were shopping for online. This was killed when users freaked out over seeing their status read which stores they were shopping at online being exposed to all their friends. It is time for Facebook to grow up as they pass a five-year mark but until they have an IPO offer, it will still be looked at as a hobby website and not a business. This is the first step for Facebook to monetize content and turn the company toward the Google model of success.
