Blu-ray another Holiday Winner

The Blu-ray disc, was another product that did well this holiday season, with sales tripling over the previous year. There were 28.6 million units sold in the fourth quarter of 2008. That number is up 9.5 million from the year before. The big seller was The Dark Knight, which sold more than a million copies the first Blu-ray to accomplish that number. When looking at these numbers it appears Blu-ray is being adopted by homes quicken the DVD technology had been. There are 10.7 million Blu-ray players in use; there are six million of these inside the Playstation 3. The market is starting to fill up with lower end models and more vendors joining the technology. Sharp has an HD TV with a built in Blu-ray. The industry is rising at an astronomical pace and that means a better year in 2009. The economy down turn has more people staying home and watching movies. There are over 40 million homes without a Blu-ray leaving plenty of room for growth. The hard numbers are still extremely out balanced as DVD sales were 21.6 billion compared to only 750 million for Blu-ray. The next thing that could change it all is direct movie downloads. This takes the need for a player out of the mix. as that is still far away by any stretch of the imagination.
